The Maps

The Maps are a coherent sequence of thematic units, roughly six per grade level, K–12. Great Minds’s Maps connect the skills delineated in the CCSS in ELA with suggested works of literature and informational texts and provide sample activities that teachers can use in their classrooms. Each map includes an overview, essential question, focus standards selected from the CCSS, suggested texts and art or music, sample activities, links to additional resources, a list of terminology, and a standards checklist. Our K-2 maps also include a pacing guide for the teaching of reading foundations and ideas for making “interdisciplinary connections” to topics outside ELA. Grade 2, Unit 1

A Season for Chapters: In this first six-week unit of second grade, students focus on the beauty of language—in chapter books, informational texts, and poetry—all related to the four seasons.

Grade 5, Unit 3

Clues to a Culture: This six-week unit focuses on aspects of Native American nations/cultures as revealed through pairing of literature and informational text.

Text Studies

Great Minds’s new text studies help teachers guide students through a close read of a carefully chosen text.

Through a cascade of text-dependent questions designed to excavate and explore the key details of a rich, complex text, students gain a better understanding of the content of the text while developing key CCSS-ELA skills. Because students benefit from engaging with new and interesting words in context, certain text-dependent questions center on academic vocabulary. A culminating performance assessment provides an opportunity to gauge student comprehension and mastery of the identified standards.
